It takes a lot of years to determine what a person truly likes. In my opinion it takes a lifetime. All likeable things are likeable for the time being until such time one is able to divert their thoughts onto something else or what is likeable now fades. Likewise, there are several factors which mold our wants / desires / needs or anything to that effect. It evolves daily and according to our experience.

Let’s take relationships for example. Unsuccessful relationships desire to obtain what has previously been lacking. These are factors by which the relationship has come to an end. Hence, in looking for a new partner, the tendency is to look for what we have not experienced before. The quest for our desire helps us curve if not improve our choices of partners.

On the other hand, in successful relationships, we strive to have ourselves constantly desired by our partners. One very obvious desire is the endeavour to become incessantly and physically wanted in which our sense of fashion changes adapting our social environment at how it evolves and enhances its own taste.

In a simple manner, what we desire is an aspiration of how we would like others to perceive us, perhaps accept us, or even just like us. Perhaps it is in our desires we manifest our hunger to be acknowledged or to be accepted as a part of the society, therefore, making our desires the marker of our life, goal and aspirations. They mold us and change us on a daily basis without us even knowing it.

Desires can both be pleasant or adverse. The desire to want something that we are not, may create a strong feeling of jealous, low sense of self-esteem and envy. In the same manner, the strong desire to achieve success in life may mean an improved work output, better self esteem, brilliance at work and a positive attitude.

Desire cannot be successful by itself. It has to work along side with a lot of other personal characteristic, a well defined objective and goal. Understanding how these intermingle with each other can make a person better and more positive.
